Joe Konz  > Communities > DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind.
The nicely landscaped campus of DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., located in Putnam County about 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis, is worth a visit on an average day. But on the one day every two years when it hosts the annual Monon Bell Classic football game against archrival Wabash College, it is a spectacle unlike anything else. The pregame tailgating -- by supporters of both schools -- sprawls over several parking lots outside Blackstock Stadium. Pulsating contemporary music is pumped out in the tailgate expanse and audible from as far away as several blocks. Tailgaters eat, drink, swap stories, toss footballs and play cornhole (regional name for a bean-bag-toss game). And various representatives of the school holding the coveted 300-pound Monon Bell victory trophy make a point -- as 2010 victor Wabash did on Nov. 12, 2011, on the day of this year's game -- to ring that bell nonstop from an hour or so before the game until an hour or so after the on-field post-game celebration breaks up -- to remind the other team who has its valued possession. Wabash had no worries this year; it retained possession of the bell -- and its perfect season record (9-0) -- with a 45-7 victory. The Little Giants will play host to next year's Monon Bell Classic in Crawfordsville, Ind., just 28 miles north of Greencastle along Highway 231 in Montgomery County.
